Plant Spacing & Plant Count Calculator

Estimate how many plant positions fit in a rectangular bed when you know the distance between plants, between rows, and from the bed edges.

01 / ENTER YOUR BED & SPACING

Set your planting layout

Measure inside the bed, then use the spacing recommended for your plants. Rows run along the bed length.

Bed dimensions
Plant centers

Center-to-center distance, not the diameter of a plant pot.

Clearance from bed edges

Default: half of each spacing at both ends and on both sides. For 12 in spacing, that is a 6 in margin.

HOW THE CALCULATION WORKS

Count places along a row, then count the rows

The tool places plant centers in a regular rectangular grid. It reserves the edge margins first, then fits whole spacing intervals into the remaining distance. It does not assume that plants grow in a square or that every crop needs identical row spacing.

01 · LENGTHPositions per row

floor((length − 2 × end margin) ÷ plant spacing) + 1

02 · WIDTHNumber of rows

floor((width − 2 × side margin) ÷ row spacing) + 1

03 · TOTALPlant positions

Rows × positions per row. If the effective distance is negative, the count for that direction is zero.

The extra length and width shown in the results are unused distance after the requested minimum edge clearances and spacing intervals. If you center the grid, half of that extra distance is available at each opposite edge.

WORKED GARDEN EXAMPLE

A 4 × 8 ft bed at 12 inch centers

BED SIZE8 × 4 ft
PLANT / ROW SPACING12 in / 12 in
EDGE MARGINS6 in on every side
CALCULATED PLAN4 rows × 8 = 32 positions

This counts positions, not an automatic crop recommendation. Check the seed packet or a crop-specific planting guide before deciding whether 12-inch centers are suitable for your plants.

BEFORE YOU PLANT

Where the count can change

Use inside measurements

Measure the planting surface, not the outside of the bed frame. A pathway, support or permanent feature can reduce usable positions.

Use crop-specific spacing

A 12-inch number in the example is arithmetic, not a recommendation for every crop. Row spacing and plant spacing can be different.

Know the layout assumption

This calculator uses a regular rectangular row grid. It does not estimate staggered or hexagonal layouts, succession plantings or companion crop combinations.
