Garden Mulch Calculator

Measure the planting area, subtract any uncovered sections and enter the mulch depth you chose. Estimate bulk cubic yards, bag counts and the additional mulch needed for a measured top-up. This calculator does not choose a mulch depth for you.

WORKED EXAMPLE · USER-SELECTED DEPTH33.33 ft³

200 ft² × 2 inches of mulch

1.235 yd³ or 17 bags at 2 ft³ each

01

YOUR MEASUREMENTS

Measure the area and layer

Exclude paths, plant crowns, bare trunk rings or other spaces you will not mulch. Use a nonoverlapping total.

OPTIONAL PURCHASE PLANNING

Allowance starts at 0%. Bag totals round up to whole bags. Stock only reduces the number left to buy, not the material requirement. No automatic settling factor is applied.

VOLUME & BAG ESTIMATE

Your mulch requirements

Layer depth × actual covered areaCalculate what the mulch layer needs.

Enter the area and your chosen depth to see the volume, bulk yards and optional bag count.

MEASURE FIRST

Measure the ground receiving mulch, not the whole yard

01 / COVERAGE

Exclude areas you will leave bare

Use the actual bed footprint, then subtract paths, uncovered pockets and any space intentionally kept clear around plant stems or tree trunks. Do not subtract the same space twice.

02 / FINAL DEPTH

Choose depth for the material and site

The calculator only uses your specified final depth. Appropriate depths depend on the mulch material, plant type and purpose. Check the mulch depth guide before entering a rate.

03 / TOP-UP

Measure what remains before topping up

Select Top-up when mulch already covers the area. A current layer meeting or exceeding the chosen target yields no new mulch requirement, not a negative amount.

WORKED EXAMPLE

From square feet and inches to cubic yards and bags

Mulch to add (ft³) = actual covered area (ft²) × extra layer depth (in) ÷ 12. Bulk volume (yd³) = cubic feet ÷ 27. Whole bags = round up purchase volume ÷ listed bag volume. A top-up uses max(final depth − existing depth, 0).

For 200 ft² and a chosen layer depth of 2 inches, the volume is 200 × 2 ÷ 12 = 33.33 ft³, or approximately 1.235 yd³. With 2 ft³ bags and no extra allowance, 33.33 ÷ 2 rounds up to 17 bags.

For a top-up, suppose 1 inch is already present across the same 200 ft² and the target is 2 inches. Only 1 inch needs adding, requiring 16.67 ft³, or 9 bags of 2 ft³. The whole-bed target volume remains 33.33 ft³ even though the material to buy is less.

USE THE ESTIMATE CORRECTLY

Volume is not a recommendation to bury the root zone

PLANT SAFETY

Keep mulch away from trunks and crowns

Do not pile mulch up against tree trunks, woody stems or plant crowns. Leave a suitable clear space and follow plant-specific guidance rather than spreading to the stem.

NOT ALL MULCH IS THE SAME

Depth and coverage depend on material

Wood chips, bark, straw, shredded leaves and mineral mulch behave differently. A geometric volume estimate cannot choose the material, appropriate thickness or watering adjustments.

PACKAGING & BULK

Bag count is rounded up, not a measured yield

Use the bag’s printed volume. Loose material, grading, ground contours and handling can affect coverage. No default shrinkage, settling percentage or delivery increment is assumed.
