Drip Irrigation Runtime Calculator

Enter the number of emitters, their rated flow and the total volume of water you want delivered. Get a run-time estimate for emitters operating together, with a clear breakdown for each emitter group.

FOUR 1-GPH EMITTERS / WORKED EXAMPLE30 min

4 emitters × 1 gallon per hour = 4 GPH

A target of 2 US gallons ÷ 4 gallons per hour = 0.5 hour.

Emitter groups

Add one row for each emitter flow rating. Include only emitters running at the same time.

1 / 8 groups

GROUP 01FLOW + COUNT
Up to 8 groups, each with its own flow rate.

VOLUME IS FOR THE WHOLE RUNNING GROUP

The target is the total water volume across every emitter listed, not gallons per plant. Flow ratings are nominal unless verified under your actual pressure and setup.

02

CALCULATED OUTPUT

Your drip irrigation run time

Start with your emitter specs

Enter one or more groups and your own volume target to calculate nominal delivery time and each group’s contribution.

THREE STEPS

Measure what the whole emitter group can deliver

01 / COUNT

Count emitters operating together

If some emitters run on a different valve or schedule, do not add them to the same calculation. Enter another row when emitters have a different rated flow.

02 / CHECK THE LABEL

Use the correct flow units

Emitter labels may show gallons per hour (GPH) or liters per hour (LPH). Use rates valid for your operating pressure. A hose-flow test alone does not establish each emitter’s actual output.

03 / CHOOSE THE TARGET

Enter a total volume

Use an independently selected volume target for the entire emitter group. Water per plant cannot be inferred unless the number of emitters serving each plant is known.

CALCULATION METHOD

Convert gallons per hour into minutes

Combined flow (GPH) = sum of (emitters in each group × flow per emitter in GPH). Hours = total target gallons ÷ combined GPH. Minutes = hours × 60.

For four emitters rated at 1 GPH each, the group produces 4 nominal gallons per hour. With a separately chosen total target of 2 US gallons, the calculated run time is 30 minutes. If you add two more emitters at 0.5 GPH each, the combined rate becomes 5 GPH and the same 2-gallon target takes 24 minutes.

Emitter allocation matters

Four 1-GPH emitters running for 30 minutes deliver 0.5 gallon per emitter in the nominal model. That is not automatically 0.5 gallon per plant: one plant might receive two emitters while another receives none.

BEFORE SETTING THE TIMER

What the flow calculation cannot guarantee

PRESSURE + REGULATION

Emitter ratings assume proper conditions

Supply pressure, regulator choice, elevation and tubing layout can affect actual delivery. An emitter labeled 1 GPH is not proof that your installation delivers exactly that amount.

CLOGS + UNIFORMITY

Equal run time does not mean equal water

Partial clogs or mismatched emitter performance may make some plants receive less water. Check emitters and soil wetting patterns rather than relying on total flow alone.

PLANT + SOIL NEEDS

The calculator does not set demand

Choose water targets and frequency from plant requirements, weather, soil and local guidance. A target volume is not proof that moisture reaches the intended root zone.
