Fertilizer Rate Calculator

Already have a nutrient rate from a soil test or an appropriate recommendation? Enter that rate, your measured area and the fertilizer’s N-P-K guaranteed analysis to calculate product weight. This tool does not decide which nutrient rate or fertilizer you should use.

ARITHMETIC EXAMPLE · NOT A RECOMMENDED DOSE10 lb of product

1,000 ft² · target 1 lb N per 1,000 ft² · 10-10-10 label

Supplies 1 lb each of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O label equivalents.

01

YOUR RECOMMENDATION & LABEL

Enter measured area and nutrient target

NUTRIENT TO MATCH

Use the rate supplied by your soil-test report, extension guidance or approved product directions. Changing the controlling nutrient clears the rate so an old target is not reused.

FERTILIZER GUARANTEED ANALYSIS (% BY WEIGHT)

The second and third numbers are P₂O₅ and K₂O label equivalents, not the masses of elemental P and K.

OPTIONAL PURCHASE & UPPER-LIMIT CHECKS

Optional maximum nutrient amounts across the entire entered area, in lb (not per 1,000 ft²). Blank means no comparison.

Maximums are not supplied by this calculator. If any calculated nutrient exceeds a maximum you entered, the tool shows a warning; it does not silently change product mass.

READ THE GUARANTEED ANALYSIS

The three numbers are not interchangeable nutrient targets

01 / NITROGEN

The first number is N

For a 10-10-10 fertilizer, 10% of the product’s weight is nitrogen. A target of 1 lb N requires 10 lb of that product because 1 ÷ 0.10 = 10.

02 / PHOSPHATE

The second number is P₂O₅

Fertilizer labels express phosphorus using phosphate (P₂O₅) equivalents. Do not enter a recommendation stated in elemental P as though it were P₂O₅.

03 / POTASH

The third number is K₂O

Potassium is shown as potash (K₂O) equivalents. Compare recommendations and guaranteed analysis using the same nutrient basis before calculating.

WORKED EXAMPLE

How to translate a nutrient rate into product weight

Target nutrient (lb) = chosen rate in lb per area basis × measured area ÷ reference area. Product (lb) = required selected nutrient (lb) ÷ (selected label percent ÷ 100). Each other nutrient (lb) = product weight × its N-P-K label percentage ÷ 100.

Suppose an existing, appropriate recommendation calls for 1 lb of N per 1,000 ft², your measured area is 1,000 ft² and your chosen product is labeled 10-10-10. The math is 1 ÷ 0.10 = 10 lb of fertilizer. That weight contains 1 lb N, 1 lb P₂O₅ and 1 lb K₂O as label equivalents. It does not establish that the phosphorus or potassium amounts are suitable for the site.

If you change the area unit or rate basis, the calculator converts the entered measurements to preserve their actual value. Switching the controlling nutrient clears the target rate to prevent accidentally applying an N recommendation as a P₂O₅ or K₂O recommendation.

IMPORTANT BOUNDARIES

The correct arithmetic can still describe the wrong application

NUTRIENT TARGET

Do not guess a nutrient rate

Use recommendations that match the specific plant, soil test, intended treatment and local instructions. The calculator does not diagnose deficiencies or choose how much fertilizer a garden needs.

ADDITIONAL NUTRIENTS

Watch the other two numbers

A product selected to meet one nutrient target may deliver more of another nutrient than appropriate. The optional maximum check highlights only the ceilings you supplied; it never declares an unentered quantity safe.

LABEL & ENVIRONMENT

Confirm restrictions before spreading

Verify product instructions, nutrient forms, controlled-release claims, application timing and site-specific runoff rules. A mathematical bag count is not permission to apply or a spreader calibration setting.
